Coming Down from the Holidays

It always takes me a few days to get myself back together after the insanity of the holidays.  I love that time of year, but I'm also so ready for the New Year to happen and be over with, so we can all try to get back to our already overbooked routine.

I don't make New Year's resolutions, but I do try to orient myself so I can start working in a direction of a goal.  I feel I need to start spending less time being surrounded by chatter, noise, and music and more time just being.  I realize one of my most favorite times of the day is when I get up earlier than Shug to write my blog post for the day.  While I truly enjoy the blogging part of my early mornings, I have discovered I love the silence, too.

When I let Ruby out into the dark morning after we've been all snuggled up in bed, the cold and the heavy quiet have the most calming and invigorating effect on me.  These opposite feelings are also coupled with a clarity I usually lose once the noise of the day gets into full swing.

Do you have a favorite time of day?  I want to try to recreate this time I enjoy so much throughout the course of my crazy days, even if it's just for a minute or two...!

Beach Dreamin'

Brrr!  It's gonna get ridiculously cold in Utah the next few days.
I'm not gonna lie, after the holidays pass, I'm o-v-e-r winter.

I'm just going to daydream about a warm, sandy beach today.

Happy Holidays

I hope you have a wonderful holiday and weekend.

This is a little clip of a favorite downtown street artist, Eli Potash.
He is always playing his cello outside a local independent movie theatre.

A talented and elusive local band, the Daniel Day Trio,
decided to jam with Eli and also give him a gift for Christmas.

Watch this and let your loved ones know how much you love them.

Happy, happy holidays!

Countdown!

How was your weekend?  Was it as crazy as mine was?  Even though mine was crazy, I felt like I got a lot accomplished!  I was able to:

  • Host book club
  • Clean the house
  • Perfect my hummus recipe
  • Work!
  • Package all of our out-of-town gifts
  • Complete our Holiday cards
  • Bake a bazillion loaves of jalapeno corn bread
  • Label our Green Tomato Jam
  • Deliver all that cornbread and jam to our favorite peeps
I feel a little badly about dropping off all our our local holiday gifts at 6:30 on a Sunday evening, but if it wasn't getting done yesterday, it wasn't getting done at all!  I hate the "drop-by," too!  And we were the biggest offenders last night!  Shug made me stay in the car while he dropped off the gifts, because he knew I would just talktalktalk...and that's probably true;)!  How was your weekend?  Did it feel like you had one at all?

Having a DIY Moment Over Here

Over the weekend Shug and I had the opportunity to hang out with his two little sisters, 13 and 9.  They are as bright and lovely as can be, but also very, very, very bored with everything about five minutes after we arrive/make a plan/choose an activity.

To combat this killer boredom, I bought a pom pom maker so the girls could make holiday wreaths to bring home to Shug's and their mom.  It was the BEST IDEA EVER.  We made pom poms for ten hours straight, only breaking for hot chocolate and the parts of Labyrinth where David Bowie dances in his tights.

I now have pom pom plans, people. PLANS!

he gets to retire!
Congrats, Pop!

Almost there!

Here's a little holiday table scape I did in the dining area.
Better known as "Ruby's Room."

Since we never get to eat in there, I thought I could at least decorate!!

I hope all of your shopping and preparing is winding down!

Serves Me Right.

Remember how p.o.'d I was a week or so ago because Shug kept on buying himself stuff during the holidays? Well, after serving myself a big ol' slice of hypocrite pie, I decided to buy myself something before Christmas: a new camera.

This camera was supposed to make my dreams come true. It was miniature, cute, vintage-looking, digital, uber-portable, cute, came in a fancy-schmancy wooden box, weighed mere ounces, and it was cute. Did I mention how cute this camera was? I wanted, nay, I NEEDED this little beauty to be perfect. Why? Well, I didn't consult Shug about purchasing it...I just up and bought it myself...Without consulting the world's expert-on-damn-near-everything-camera about it!

Annnnd, let's just say that I have learned that cameras that are cute don't always take the best pictures....

Exhibit A
Exhibit B
It's being shipped back today...Shug's gloating has added the insult to cute camera injury.

Aren't these globes beautiful!
They would make the perfect home for a terrarium.

I love this site, terrain, since it has such a great inventory
plus

What a unique gift this would be!

Early Christmas

Shug and I had the best weekend in Denver!
We went to visit my parents, eat delicious food, and play Wii!

I was a little sad that I wouldn't be able to spend Christmas with them this year,
but my parents decided to have Christmas a little early and flew us out to Denver
for a long weekend!

Some highlights:
  • Eating a Denver omelette IN Denver (see above)
  • Seeing a Broadway musical (culture!)
  • Drinking champagne and playing Wii with Mom and Dad
  • Eating the BEST bison tenderloin ever
  • Walking around downtown Denver at night
  • Diamonds and pearls
  • Serious shopping with Mom
  • Beautiful holiday window displays
  • Morning coffee in our jammies until noon
  • My new glitter snowman globe
  • I found a gift for Shug!!!!
  • Just getting to spend time with my parents! They're fun!
I may be a little biased, but Denver is a pretty cool city.
