Zac Posen

I needed to engage in a little retail therapy after work yesterday.

Nothing horrible happened, it's just really draining some days, ya know?

Since I work out in BFE annnnnd Target is close by,
I decided to stop in an peruse the sale rack,
which is usually seizure-inducing
in its gross lack of organization and wearable clothes.

BUT, I found ridiculous Zac Posen for Target deals!!!
Shirts for $6 and an amazing LBD for $19.

I know!

Therapy was a success.

Standing Up

This is Joan Trumpauer Mulholland.  She was nineteen when this mugshot was taken in 1961 for protesting segregation in a non-violent Freedom Rider protest in Mississippi.  She went on to go to college at Tougaloo, as one of five white students.  She graduated in 1964, went on to teach in Virginia  and raise five sons.

I'm looking to Ms. Trumpauer Mulholland for inspiration and fortification, since Utah is moving forward in drafting a bill similar to Arizona's.  I want to be able to tell my kids that I stood up for something when it was wrong.  How lucky are her sons to be raised by such an amazing woman?

From the Breach of Peace blog: She joined the Freedom Riders, she says, “because none of the things I was being taught in Sunday School were being applied in real life. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ The children’s songs we all learned – ‘Jesus loves the little children … red and yellow, black and white.’ ”

Eggs

Have you ever had a "farm fresh" egg?  Before today I wold have answered "yes," because the organic, free-range eggs I purchase clearly state: FARM FRESH right on the package.  Yes, I am a sucker for what's printed on a package of food I consume, because it's in the great hope that what I find inside will indeed be a myriad of things pertinent to my survival that the package promises.  Silly little words like gluten-free, pesticide-free, and organic are all on the roster.  I really thought I was eating the "best" I could.

Enter Rico Locals, locally grown Utah food brought to a convenient, downtown center.  Shug brought home some "farm-fresh" eggs a few days ago and, thinking they were like allllll the other "farm-fresh" eggs we've consumed in the past, they sat in my fridge for a few days.

This morning, with a very welcome unexpected day off, I indulged myself in an omelette.  After the first egg was cracked I knew something was up.  The bright, vibrant hue of the yolk practically blinded me!  I have always thought egg yolks were yellow...that's how they're depicted in cartoons, pictures, and in my mixing bowl.  These yolks were ORANGE.  Glaring, healthy, sunny, ORANGE.  The first rational thought that popped into my head was, "They must have gone bad. Egg yolks are never this color."

I cracked egg number two.  SAME THING!  I decided to crack a third and if all three were this alien-orange color, I'd give it the good ol' college try and eat them.  Sure enough, the third egg was just as loud of an orange hue as the previous two.  Into the pan they went.

As the eggs cooked, instead of opaquing into a soft buttery yellow, they morphed into a rich golden saffron color.  I was really getting freaked out.  What if I poisoned myself?!?  What if they had already gone bad?!?  What if all of the eggs I've consumed in my life were just "blah" and these eggs were "bang"!?!?!  EXISTENTIAL CRISIS.

The eggs sizzled sweetly in their pan as the sun through the window caught the wafts of steam curling up from the stovetop.  I plated the eggs, gave them the holy trinity of egg dressing: freshly cracked black pepper, ketchup, and Cholula.  I readied myself for the worst.

Words cannot describe how lovely and perfect these eggs were.  They were rich, flavorful, and delicious and I am sad to say I have NEVER tasted an egg like this.  In 27 seconds my newly found love was gone.  I hadn't the strength to savor them.

But, I'm planning on omelettes for lunch and dinner.

Natural Beauty: Mascara

My six-month-long-and-counting experiment in ridding my life of parabens continues, but I've had a few small victories along the way!

Finding natural products that work as well, if not better, than products with parabens has been a challenge.  Parabens help everything in cosmetics from being spreadable, extending their shelf life, and to not flake, to name a few...So finding products that work as well as paraben-laden junk has been tough.

But today I feel victorious, because I have found a mascara that's BETTER than any of that paraben crap!  It's Korres Provitamin B5 & Rice Bran Lash-Strengthening Mascara.  It's highly pigmented and is really layerable, plus it has virtually NO flakiness.  I wore this by the ocean, out in the sun, for an entire day and didn't even need a touch-up for dinner (my stinky armpits are another story!)

I also really like tarte's Natural Lights, Camera, Lashes! "push-up bra for your lashes" mascara.  It's not as pigmented as the Korres mascara, but it made my lashes suuuuuper long and luxe.  It's more of a night-time mascara, since it's pretty easy to Tammy Faye yourself with this stuff.  It's a bit flaky towards the end of the day, but if you're only wearing this at night, no one can see!

Do you have any paraben-free make-up that you love?

Yellow Dress Search Continues...

STILL looking for the right shade of yellow....

Help!
This cute number is by THREAD, but it's waaaay outside my price range.

P.S. This is totally unrelated, but for the most heart-warming and raw birth story, head on over to Pacing the Panic Room.  And bring tissues.

San Diego, Part Dos

Not often does a gal get to visit the same beach twice in one summer.

Well, I'm that lucky girl!

I plan on at least one of each of the following:
  • fish tacos from a seaside grill
  • a shot of tequila with lots of salt and lime
  • using an entire bottle of sunblock
  • a belly laugh (or 20)
  • quality time with some of the best girls I know
  • some sand between my toes
  • bachelorette being embarrassed by our behavior;)
  • a double bloody mary
  • sleeping in!!!!!
P.S. This is my first day off in almost a month!
I'm so excited!

See you on Monday!

A little behind the times...

I know that I'm one of the last people in America that hadn't watched Madmen.  I could blame our lack of cable or my busy schedule, but honestly there is no excuse.  Shug and I are in love with this show!

We are even nerdy enough to look for furniture and design elements we like from each episode.  I had a heart attack over this couch in the episode we watched last night.  The sleek mid-century aesthetic that was popular during the 60s has been the object of desire for us at every yard sale, thrift shop, and estate sale we've ever attended.  So, I'm sure you can imagine how fun it is for us to see an ENTIRE SHOW full of furniture, art, and architecture we love!

Oh. And the storyline and characters aren't half bad, either.

Tame Impala

I am a little in love with Tame Impala right now. We were acquainted on a long drive through Idaho farmlands. It was the perfect music for open spaces.

As for the video...well, if you are an animal lover, just open another window while you listen to the music...I know, I know.  But, hey, at least I didn't post this.

I love these gauzy tops from Snoozer Loser.

SLC Oil Spill

Oil spills can happen anywhere.  Even in my own backyard.

This last weekend a Chevron pipe burst in a beautiful place called Red Butte Creek.
The oil leaked into the creek and down into our city waterways.
It ended up in our city park's lake.

I'm pretty sure wind power and solar power "leaks" are ridiculously rare.

Bish, plz.

Dear Individual with an opinion all your own,

You are SO special!  Thank you so much for gracing me with your opinion of my appearance.  I don't have the pleasure of knowing you in real life, but I am seriously SO grateful that you took the time out of your obvs busy day to comment on a picture of me on facebook.

Not only will I be sure to never NOT impress strangers on the internet again, I will be sure to clear any picture that will be posted of me with you to make sure YOU are impressed (cuz that's what I live for!) before I even think of putting my gross face/body/style out there on the internets.

Whew!  You really saved me from such anguish and torture!  Honestly, I am so lucky that you shared your awesomeness and excellent taste!!!

Wren

The View from Up Here

I'm not the hugest fan of flying in airplanes,

but one of the things I look forward to is getting to see the land below blocked together like patches on a large, verdant quilt.

These carpets are BRILLIANT.
They use the color schemes from different parts of the world to create regional tapestries to cover your floors!

Not only are these carpets beautiful, feeling like you're flying ain't half bad, either.

Camera Bag Dupe

If anyone knows Shug, they know he looooves photography.

Our camera count in the house is at an all-time-high of 26.

Yes, 26 cameras live in our house.

The funnier part of this equation is that we have ONE

functioning camera bag that Shug deplores.

I thought this Fjallraven Backback would be a good lil' bugger to lug around a few of those cameras!

The Body Amazing

I sometimes forget a body is a delicate jumble of moving parts.
This is an MRI of a diva and a beatboxer.

Neat.

Have a lovely summer weekend!

Pause.

It's been a long weekend.

And what I learned this weekend is to be sure to tell the people

that are important to you

that you love them more than french fries.

Every chance you get.

xo.
